#August21 Nationwide Prisoner Strike

August 21 – September 9, 2018: Prisoners with Jailhouse Lawyers Speak and other formations issue 10 national demands with a call to action for workstoppages, sitdown strikes, hunger strikes and boycotts of the commissary.

Prisoners in seventeen states commit to the action, and outside support grows to include over 300 organizations and dozens of solidarity rallies and events. Prison systems lock down multiple facilities, isolate leaders and crackdown on prisoner communication to inhibit organizing and prevent outside supporters from learning of inside events.

Hunger Strike and Encampment at Northwest Detention Center, Tacoma

July 14-17, 2018: More than 40 detainees in pod A2 begin a hunger strike “to share the opinions of mistreatment that occur inside, and to ask for changes in ICE and GEO’s policies” the detainees say in a public statement. The hunger strike lasts four days. In early July, supporters begin an encampment outside the detention center that lasts more than a month.

Hunger Strike at Washington State Penitentiary, Walla Walla

April 1-12, 2018: Prisoners begin a hunger strike on Easter Sunday that lasts at least 11 days and involves at least 1,315 prisoners–including prisoners in all six units of the prison’s West Complex. All prisoners in the West Complex who are not “elderly or infirm” participate. Prison officials state that strike is related to food quality.

Hunger Strike at Northwest Detention Center, Washington

February 7, 2018: Following a work stoppage by detainees employed in the kitchen on February 7, over 120 detainees launch a hunger strike on February 9 in protest of abuses by guards, food quality issues and other conditions. In retaliation for the hunger strike, guards beat detainees and put them in solitary confinement. NWDC was the site of at nine hunger strikes in 2017, according to the group Northwest Detention Center Resistance.

August 8, 2017: For at least the fourth time in a year, detainees at the NWDC go on hunger strike. This time 20 detainees refuse meals after being placed in the hole for protesting an assault by guards on an 18-year-old detainee.
