#August21 Nationwide Prisoner Strike

August 21 – September 9, 2018: Prisoners with Jailhouse Lawyers Speak and other formations issue 10 national demands with a call to action for workstoppages, sitdown strikes, hunger strikes and boycotts of the commissary.

Prisoners in seventeen states commit to the action, and outside support grows to include over 300 organizations and dozens of solidarity rallies and events. Prison systems lock down multiple facilities, isolate leaders and crackdown on prisoner communication to inhibit organizing and prevent outside supporters from learning of inside events.

Hunger Strike at Wynne Unit, Huntsville, TX

April 11- April 20, 2018: Prisoners launch a hunger strike in protest of a lockdown at the prison. According to prison officials, 50 prisoners refuse meals at the height of the 10 day hunger strike.

Riot at Washington County Jail, Texas

June 17, 2017: At least 12 prisoners rush a guard at their cell door and take control of the area beyond. After guards retake the block, prisoners express various grievances related to their housing arrangements and classification status.

Uprising at Kinney County Detention Center, Texas

January 26, 2017: About 65 prisoners take partial control of the prison by refusing to leave the recreation area and returning to their cells, in protest of the removal of a fellow prisoner. Guards respond with tear gas and forcible removals.

Hunger Strike at Alfred Hughes Unit, Texas

September 22 – October 1, 2016: One trans woman endures a hunger strike for more than a week to demand precedent-setting access to bras for protection, modesty during strip searches, and support during hormone therapy. Guards make threats and one guard suggests that the trans prisoner castrate herself. The prisoner, Vanessa Gibson, wins access to bras and is currently suing TDOC.

2016 National Prison Strike, Texas

September 9, 2016: Prisoners across seven facilities in Texas go on strike to protest their conditions of confinement, including unpaid prison labor, toxic water, mold, and excessive heat. With multiple prisons on lockdown and restrictions on both incoming and outgoing prisoner mail, guards deny that prisoners are participating in the strike. Prisoners eventually confirm participation at seven prisons. Austin ABC helps amplify the struggle of a trans woman who went on hunger strike and won gender affirming clothing.

National Prison Strike

September 9, 2016: The strike called for and supported by multiple prisoner and support organizations kicks off on the 45th anniversary of the Attica Uprising. Dozens of facilities experience some kind of disturbance or lockdown. Accurate numbers are difficult to gather because of uncooperative prison staff, but between 20,000 and 60,000 prisoners participate or are effected. The workstrike is especially impactful in Florida, Texas, South Carolina and parts of Michigan. There are also hunger strikes in Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as smaller protests on the West Coast and across the country. Outside support includes many solidarity actions, media attention and support calls / letter writing campaigns.

Uprising During Power Outage and Forced Evacuation at Luther Unit in Texas

May 21, 2016: At least 50 prisoners refuse to comply with orders, refusing to return to their cells, during a power outage caused by flooding. After one hour of protest of, guards use chemical agents to subdue the protest and send three prisoners to the hospital for unknown injuries.

Rolling Work Strikes in Prisons Throughout Texas

April 4-20, 2016: Prisoners call for a strike across Texas, spreading the word to the outside primarily through Incarcerated Worker’s Organizing Committee (IWOC) networks. At least 4 prisons participate in the rolling work strikes. The announcement of the nationally coordinated September 9th strike goes public three days before this strike, and spreads with its coverage.

March 17, 2014: Detainees at the Joe Corley Detention Center launch hunger strike in solidarity with detainees on strike in Tacoma, Washington. Outside supporters stage two solidarity actions, one at the facility, and the other in downtown Houston.
