Nationwide prison strike: North Carolina

August 21 – September 9, 2018: North Carolina prisoners issue a set of 8 additional demands focusing on mental health treatment and solitary confinement as well as a call for truce between different population sets. On August 20, supporters gather for a noise demo outside Hyde Correctional Institution during the prisoners’ yard time. Prisoners respond to the demo by holding up their own banners saying “parole” “better food” and “solidarity”. Later, two Hyde prisoners are interviewed on WUNC radio, and prison staff sends them and other strike organizers across the state to solitary confinement.

#August21 Nationwide Prisoner Strike

August 21 – September 9, 2018: Prisoners with Jailhouse Lawyers Speak and other formations issue 10 national demands with a call to action for workstoppages, sitdown strikes, hunger strikes and boycotts of the commissary.

Prisoners in seventeen states commit to the action, and outside support grows to include over 300 organizations and dozens of solidarity rallies and events. Prison systems lock down multiple facilities, isolate leaders and crackdown on prisoner communication to inhibit organizing and prevent outside supporters from learning of inside events.

Uprising at Pasquotank Correctional Institution, North Carolina

October 12, 2017: Prisoners set fire to the “specialty sewing plant” of the prison and attempt to escape. Four prison employees are killed and several others injured.

Uprising at Neuse Correctional Institution, North Carolina

October 23 – November 11, 2016: Prisoners start fires in two buildings of the prison, break windows, damage dorms and attack two prison vehicles.

Attack on Guards at Lanesboro Correctional Institution, North Carolina

September 29, 2016: Four guards are stabbed by prisoners, including a lieutenant and sergeant. Two are flown to hospital in critical condition.
