#August21 Nationwide Prisoner Strike

August 21 – September 9, 2018: Prisoners with Jailhouse Lawyers Speak and other formations issue 10 national demands with a call to action for workstoppages, sitdown strikes, hunger strikes and boycotts of the commissary.

Prisoners in seventeen states commit to the action, and outside support grows to include over 300 organizations and dozens of solidarity rallies and events. Prison systems lock down multiple facilities, isolate leaders and crackdown on prisoner communication to inhibit organizing and prevent outside supporters from learning of inside events.

Hunger Strike at Edmonton Remand Centre, Alberta, Canada

January 6-10, 2018: At least 55 prisoners at the Edmonton Remand Centre in Alberta, Canada launch a hunger strike to protest an increase in violent attacks on prisoners by corrections officers. The jail responds by placing all striking prisoners in isolation and taking away their personal property. The hunger strike resolves 3 days later, according to the jail administration.

Uprising at Saskatchewan Penitentiary, Canada

December 14, 2016: At least 185 prisoners refuse to attend their normally-scheduled activities and instead mask up, destroy surveillance cameras, erect barricades, set fires, destroy significant portions of the prison and smash a hole in the floor so they can move to different units.

Hunger Strike at Central East Correctional Centre, Ontario

October 16-29, 2016: Immigrant detainees re-launch their hunger strike (which had ended in July) in protest of their placement in maximum security prisons, indefinite detention of immigrants and a variety of other grievances. The outside group End Immigration Detention Network holds solidarity demonstrations and supports the strikes, which last over two weeks.

July 11-29, 2016: A group of immigrant detainees in two facilities in Ontario participate in a coordinated hunger strike in protest of their placement in maximum security prisons, indefinite detention of immigrants and a variety of other grievances. The outside group End Immigration Detention Network holds solidarity demonstrations and supports the strikes. There would be a hunger strike only 3 months later at the same facility.

Protest at Toronto South Detention Centre, Ontario

June 9, 2016: As many as 160 prisoners at the Toronto South Detention Centre refuse to return to their cells in protest of inhumane conditions caused, in part, by frequent lockdowns. Prisoners sit in the yard during the protest. This protest follows a series of hunger strikes that occurred at the jail in 2015, also in protest of frequent lockdowns and problems with prison infrastructure at the brand-new, $1 billion jail.

Uprising at Thunder Bay Jail District, Ontario

December 7, 2015: At least 70 prisoners take control of the top floor of the jail and leave it “destroyed.” They take a guard hostage and make demands in a riot that lasts over 12 hours. Eventually, tactical units from several cities respond to the riot and regain control of the prison.

September 20, 2013: About 200 immigrant detainees stage a protest and hunger strike in response to a recent mass transfer and the prison conditions that denied them access to their legal counsel, family visitation, and recreational programming. Due to the lack off resolution, a few of the hunger strikers resume their hunger strike.
